Today there are nearly 20,000 offenders in state correctional facilities throughout Louisiana. Prison Enterprises plays an important role in the Department of Corrections operations by providing work opportunities for many of these offenders. We provide unique job opportunities for them that in most cases would otherwise be unavailable. These jobs, which include sewing, carpentry, welding, printing, embroidery, silk screening, and many others, teach these men and women valuable skills as well as a work ethic and a sense of responsibility.
A key way to measure the success of what we do is by looking at the recidivism rate, which measures the rate at which offenders repeat criminal behavior once released from prison. In Louisiana, the overall recidivism rate is 47%, but for those men and women who work for Prison Enterprises that rate drops to only 38%. This is significant because when those 9% of men and women successfully re-enter our society, they make our state both economically and culturally stronger.
If you are a local, parish, or state governmental entity or a non-profit 501c3 organization you can purchase any item in our state contract without bidding and delivery is absolutely free. By purchasing from Prison Enterprises, you are helping Louisiana’s local economy and you are helping the lives of the men and women who make our fine products; both while they are incarcerated and after they re-enter society.
